Today I’m shining the spotlight on a beautiful beach town that I proudly call home: Carlsbad, CA. I have to admit, when I first moved down to Carlsbad from Los Angeles, I had never heard of Carlsbad before. And, I remember thinking it felt like I was in another state. Maybe it was the shock of coming from the hustle and bustle of L.A. to the laid-back feel of this surf town. But, I have grown to love it! Not only is it a safe community to raise a family but it has a beach town vibe with laid-back attitude combined with modern city features. And with all that, it’s no wonder that major biotech and tech companies choose Carlsbad as their corporate headquarters. As the locals like to say, “Carlsbad is a medium size city with a small town feels” So, with that, I’d like to share some of what makes Carlsbad, CA a gem:
Carlsbad Village: Carlsbad Village is the heart of Carlsbad and well, “Charming” is the word I hear most often described by visitors to the Village. Located in the northern end of town in what is referred to as “Olde Carlsbad”, it’s perfectly situated a couple of blocks from the coastline, making walking to grab some food or a drink after a long day at the beach a breeze. Wine Wednesday, taco Tuesday, live music, and awesome happy hour deals can always be found in the village or visit the Carlsbad Mineral Spa on Carlsbad Boulevard for a little self-appreciation. While there remain a few of the “tourist” shops from the old days, the revitalization of the Village in recent years has made way for many trendy boutiques and home décor shops, upscale dining. Carlsbad has become a very lively place to be – especially on the weekends.
Attractions: OK…well, I can tell you that this town works hard on making Carlsbad fun. And, a lot of things are FREE! Free concerts in the park, Free street faires, Free holiday events, marathons, ½ marathons, Turkey Trots, food and wine festivals, Art Fairs, and on and on. If you’re the person that likes to stay close to home for your fun then in Carlsbad you’ll have an event planned every weekend. Here are a few of my fav’s:
- The Flower Fields: Without sounding overly dramatic, this is a magical place. It’s flower art – a canvas painted on the hillside with flowers. The best part is anyone can see it driving down Palomar Airport Road any day during March although, I recommend buying a ticket and taking the ride on a tractor wagon around the fields. It’s the picture-perfect spot for your next holiday card! The Flower Fields are open from March 1st to May 10th, so catch it while you can!
- Of course, I have to mention LEGOLAND in my top 3. It’s one of the most sought-after amusement parks in the US and it’s right in our backyard! If you have young children, then it’s not to be missed. Unique and interactive, this theme park is home to over 60 rides, water attractions, and shows which are a perfect way to make those kiddos go over the top crazy with excitement.
- Lastly, don’t think I forgot about my favorite part of living along the coast and one of the most beautiful parts of Carlsbad- the beaches! Check out the surf + sand at South Carlsbad State Beach, a wide beach made for swimming and hanging out with friends under the sun! With coastline up and down Carlsbad, you can find your favorite beach spot to hit up on those hot sunny days! Carlsbad was recently ranked in the top 5 of medium size coastal towns to live and, I agree.
Carlsbad is only the beginning of the beautiful area we call North County, San Diego. I bet you can only imagine how much more there is to see and do in Encinitas, Cardiff, Solana Beach, Del Mar and La Jolla, Check back in for my next Neighborhood Spotlight – coming soon!
